Hello hello! It’s your favorite KPOP Stan Mana here to update you on my favorite 2020 comebacks so far. This year hasn’t been a very good year overall. It feels a little like the world is ending, doesn’t it? But on the brighter note, there were some amazing releases this year and I thought I’d share my top 10 favorite KPOP comebacks of 2020!

Dark Cloud – Younha
Younha never fails to release music I love. She’s been an artist that I’ve been following for over 10 years. Her album Unstable Mindset is a follow up of her album Stable Mindset and this album right here is beautiful.
I think this album got more attention than Younha’s usual releases because she did a song with RM of BTS. However, my personal favorite from the album is the song Dark Cloud. The song is about someone going through a heart break. The lyrics for this song is so simple, sincere… and really just sad. I’m sure anyone who’s been through a heartbreak can relate to it.
Although it’s a song about a heartbreak, I personally find that it has an oddly cold yet cozy feeling to it. A perfect song to listen to on a lonely rainy day.

STAR – Jessi
I LOVE Jessi’s Nuna EP and I’m so happy that she’s finally being recognized for her music. I feel like whenever you say Jessi, people think of her TV personality over her music, but with the Nuna EP, it’s all about the song and the dance.
Within the Nuna EP, though, my favorite song is STAR. This song is pretty much Jessi singing about her journey to stardom. I feel like she put it so nicely into the song and you definitely can feel how much the song means to her. If you didn’t know Jessi’s journey in her music career, I definitely recommend this song PLUS looking into it. I assure you, you’ll gain so much more respect for her as an artist.
Now about the song STAR itself, Jessi’s vocals in this song is amazing! I sometimes forget that Jessi is actually a singer before a rapper.

FLOWER – iKON
Oh how much I miss iKON. iDECIDE is such an underrated album in iKON’s discography in my opinion. All of the songs in the album is amazing. Of course FLOWER is hands down my favorite from the album.
I’m grateful for DK for writing FLOWER because it really was the song to make all the fighting within the fandom die down. After the song drop, I felt like we were all just crying together. Not to mention that it’s a great song in general. It quickly became one of my top iKON songs.

A lot of people speculated that the song is written as a message from iKON to B.I. Whether it’s true or not, the lyrics are poetic and shows of iKON’s vocals very well.

Zombie – Day6
What can I say about Zombie aside from it being an immediate classic. Although the beat of the song doesn’t seem slow or sad, the lyrics are actually quite depressing. People who go through these thoughts where they no longer see the point of life anymore; it’s scary.

The song feels very personal to me because I lost a friend this year who has said similar things to the lyrics of this song. It hurts a lot.
Depression is real. It’s not a quirky trait. It’s not an aesthetic. It’s not something people talk about to get attention. If you ever feel that you may have depression, don’t ever feel afraid to reach out for help. Do remember that although it is great to reach out to your friends about your concerns, it is always best to seek a professional.

DAZZLE DAZZLE – WEKI MEKI
I never really paid attention to WEKI MEKI until I saw them performing DAZZLE DAZZLE on music shows. Their choreography for the song caught my attention and made fell in love with the song. Their choreography reminded me a lot of SEVENTEEN’s style, which I later found out that it was done by one of the choreographer who often work with Hoshi for SVT songs.
Weki Meki did such an amazing job performing DAZZLE DAZZLE; it made me realize that I don’t support GG’s enough. I haven’t found my ultimate GG yet, but WEKI MEKI is up there on the list.

Paradise – VERIVERY
VERIVERY has held their place as my favorite ‘rookie’ group that debuted in 2019. When they first dropped FACE ME, I didn’t pay too much attention to the songs. But some how, the song Paradise slowly became one of my favorite VERIVERY songs out of all of their releases. Something about the song feels youthful, mythical, and I dare to say- romantic. I love it. I’m not too sure so don’t quote me on this but the song seems like it’s dedicated to their fans. Which made it extra cute.
I wish I could watch more live performances of Paradise. I’m still so surprised that it’s not a fan favorite. Or perhaps I’m just not hanging around enough VERRERs to even know.

WANNABE – ITZY
If I had to name any GG as my current favorite, I’ll probably say it’s ITZY. Their energy, their music and ah.. there’s just so much about them that I love. When WANNABE came out, I instantly fell in love. The song is about being yourself and owning it. I really like some lines in the song.

Ryujin secured her spot as my ITZY bias. I just want to adopt her. She’s the cutest. Also, thanks to this song, we got the iconic shoulder dance. Yes, yes and yes!
Although I LOVE this song and I LOVE the music video, all the members are fairly young. It was a little weird seeing the MV’s theme a little bit more mature for their age in my opinion. Regardless, still an amazing CB by ITZY.

My My – SEVENTEEN
MyMy is my favorite song to be released by SEVENTEEN in 2020. I love everything about it. The message, the dance, the melody, the concept, all of it. I was so happy to see SEVENTEEN releasing a non-love song that’s not ‘just a party bop’.
AS I mentioned, there’s so much about this song that I live. The song itself talks about the journey of youth.

The weight of happiness can’t be measured by anyone

My journey starts with me
I absolutely love the verse in the song. When they sang “The weight of happiness can’t be measured by anyone” then “No need to rush, you’re doing fine”– these to me are such reassuring words. Sometimes I wish I had words of encouragement like this when I felt like life was a race. As I got older, I could really see that life isn’t a race against anyone. It’s all about your own journey.
I could talk so much more about all the references in My My’s choreograph as well, but um… that’ll just take up the entire post HAHA. Anyways, I’ll just end it here.

God’s Menu – STRAY KIDS
OK so God’s Menu is definitely not a song I’d listen to casually in my playlists, but must I say— this song is a masterpiece. The lyrics, execution, choreo, music video, I love everything about it. How do they manage to make a seemingly repetitive song so interesting for 3+ minutes. This song has really put Stray Kids on the radar for me.
I am so in love with God’s Menu’s music video. It’s so clever. Not a single shot was wasted. From the way the director incorporated the brass band to match up with the song. The way the camera pans from one member to the other between their lines and also how they transition from one scene to the other. ALSO, the camera work??? UGH, it’s just so good. Also, you can’t ignore the iconic “cooking like a chef I’m a 5 star Michelin”
Aside from God’s Menu, entire GO生 album is a masterpiece really.

EIGHT – IU (Feat. SUGA)
Number one goes to….EIGHT!! I doubt any song that’ll be releasing for the rest of 2020 will top it either. This song resonates to me in so many levels. I heard that IU and SUGA decided to name the song EIGHT because they’re both 28 this year. Same goes with me.
As a 28 year old, I notice I spent a lot of my time reflecting on my early adulthood a lot. All the visions I had for my life in my early 20’s, I’m just not there. I don’t know if I’ll ever be there, or if it even exists. I sometimes still dream of that wonderland that I feel like I’ve come so close to it but some how lost my way again and again. That wonderland feels like a memory that has already gone by, yet at the same time I’ve never been there. It’s strange. Memories; the good and the bad ones all become something beautiful to look back at. Life truly is bitter sweet.
The line “So are you happy now?” Just really hits me hard because it’s something I often ask myself. I’m starting to realize that happiness is something you have to find within.
